When You Hire a Real Estate Team, You Don’t Get the Team. Choose the Right Agent the First Time.

Becky Harper By Becky Harper · January 8, 2026 · Luxury Buyer & Listing Agent, KW Realty Partners

Here’s the part of the big-team pitch nobody says out loud: you don’t get the team. You get one agent. The 50-person roster, the combined sales record, the five offices — those belong to the brand. What lands in your driveway is a single person, and whether they’re the seasoned closer or the newest hire is largely luck of the draw.

That’s not a knock on teams. It’s just how they work. And it’s why the smartest thing a buyer or seller can do is skip the roulette and choose the right agent the first time.

What “access to the team” actually means

When a team says you get their full resources, ask what happens on a Tuesday night when your inspection turns up a foundation question. Do you call the team? No. You call your agent. Do you get the team’s best negotiator on your offer? No. You get whoever was assigned to you. The team is a marketing entity; the transaction is a person.

This is the whole reason I built Harper Homes the way I did — not as a team you’re assigned into, but as one accountable agent with a real support team behind her. You always work with me. Behind me is a dedicated marketing team, a transaction coordinator, preferred inspectors, and a contractor bench I use every day. You get the horsepower without the hand-off.

How to pick the right agent — the first time

  • Ask for the individual’s numbers. Career sales, last 12 months, and sales in your neighborhood. Mine are public on Zillow: 244 career sales, 14 in the last 12 months, a 5.0 rating across 19 reviews.
  • Ask who does the work. Marketing, contract-to-close, repairs. If the answer is “the team,” ask which person.
  • Read the reviews for a name. Clients thank a person, never a brand. That tells you who actually shows up.
  • Ask about the bench. Inspectors, contractors, lenders. A great agent has trusted names ready before you need them.

Getting this right up front is the difference between a sale that runs smoothly and one you’re refereeing. For the full breakdown, read team vs. individual agent in Kansas City, and if you’re selling, the seven questions that predict your sale price.

Frequently asked questions

Do I work with the whole team if I hire a real estate team?

No. You are assigned one agent from the roster, and that agent handles your transaction. The team’s collective record belongs to the brand, not necessarily to your assigned agent.

How do I choose the right real estate agent the first time?

Ask for the individual agent’s personal sales numbers, ask specifically who handles marketing and contract-to-close, read reviews for the agent’s name, and ask about their inspector and contractor network.

Is an individual agent a one-person operation?

Not always. Becky Harper is one accountable agent supported by a dedicated marketing team, a transaction coordinator, preferred home inspectors, and a vetted contractor bench.
